Here are some instruments we thought might be of interest. These are instruments that have come through our shop in the past, or in a few cases, instuments we personally own. Nothing on this page is for sale. This page is for those of you who are just poking around. Have fun. We'll expand this page as instruments come along that raise our eyebrows. MARTIN GUITARS

M. Nunes Hawaiian Guitar c.1917
A most unusual (and possibly unique) Martin guitar. One of about 260 similar guitars built for Southern California Music Co., this is the only example that we know of with a spruce soundboard. All others we've seen or heard of were of all koa construction. Other than the spruce top (shaded golden brown to match the koa), it is a Southern California Music model 1350, essentially an early version of the 0-18K. The top is fan braced and all other construction details are typical Martin work for this period. The Brazilian rosewood peghead veneer bears the M. Nunes decal and the paper label inside the guitar reads "M. Nunes and Sons Royal Hawaiian Hand-made Steel Guitar made from thoroughly seasoned KOA WOOD." The ebony pyramid bridge is a replica and the guitar has been refretted with original style bar frets. All other parts are original.

Supertone Hill Country 1930s
Shown in the Sears catalog selling for $2.98. The catalog description is an example of how to make great sounding claims without actually saying anything.

"Full Round Tone... Braced Construction... Probably the lowest price at which you can buy a good, playable guitar. Sears designed this new guitar for the beginner and novelty entertainer. Surprisingly big, round tone for its size. Ligher and easier to handle than standard shape. This is not merely a novelty instrument. Leading guitar players have tried it out . . . have endorsed it as a thoroughly practical instrument . . . one that has many distinct advantages."

Luckily when our friend David Frassetto found it he paid about what it originally sold for. Nice to see that it hasn't gone down in value.
