SPRUCE TREE NEWS

SOULDIER STRAPS FOR GUITAR, MANDOLIN, BANJO

It's always fun to get another shipment of Souldier straps in the shop. In case you're not familiar with them, they're locally made using beautiful (and often vintage) fabrics stitched to recycled seat belt webbing. Besides our extensive selection of Souldier Guitar Straps, we have an ever-expanding offering of Mandolin Straps and Banjo Straps.

Tilbury Whistles

TILBURY WHISTLES

We've just begun to carry Irish style whistles made by Chuck Tilbury. These tunable whistles are built from aluminum alloy, and headjoints use a delrin plug with a curved windway. Read more about Tilbury Whistles.

NEW CLASSICAL GUITAR STRINGS - D'ADDARIO DYNACORE

Just announced from D'Addario: A new offiering in their Pro-Arte line of high grade classical guitar strings. Pro-Arte Dynacore strings use a "multifilament stranded core" in their wound strings, promising a more flexible feel, quick response, improved tuning stability and intonation consistency, and (last but not least) improved durability. They've paired these new wound strings with their popular "titanium" treble strings (previously sold individually). which offer more projection and brighter tone than traditional nylon. (They're not really made of titanium--in case you're wondering.) We already have them in stock in normal tension.

NEW UKULELE STRINGS - D'ADDARIO NYLTECH

String manufacturer D'Addario has teamed up with Aquila to produce a new line of Ukulele strings they're calling "Nyltech." (Yes, we agree, not the most imaginative name.) They've just announced these new strings--and as luck would have it, we're among the first to get them in stock. Tonally, these strings are warm but still punchy. And thanks to D'Addario's involvement, they'll be consistent in quality as well as reasonably priced. We have them in stock for Soprano Ukulele, Concert, Tenor and Baritone Uke.

Read more about New Ukuleles and Uke Accessories we carry, as well as Used and Vintage Ukes .

DIAMOND BOTTLENECKS

Finally, another batch of Diamond Bottlenecks has arrived from England. These handblown leaded glass bottlenecks are fun to look at and sweet to play. Diamond calls these their Ultimates. We also have a good supply of Diamond Redhouse bottlenecks and "Blue Diamonds," both made from authentic bottlenecks but meticulously polished.

Here's a description of Diamond Bottlenecks we have in stock.

Larrivee Mahogany Parlor Guitar

LARRIVEE ALL-MAHOGANY PARLOR GUITARS

We couldn't resist bringing in these limited production all mahogany Larrivee parlor models. They're among the last of the Larrivee parlors to be built, and this model is a bit different than most. Here's a larger photo.

Here's a complete listing of all Larrivee guitars we have in stock.

FISHMAN AMPLIFIER NEWS

It's here: Fishman's most recent amp, the Fishman Loudbox Artist. It's a feature-packed and powerful 120 watt package in a still-manageable 25-1/2 pound size.

Also regularly in stock, our most popular Fishman amp, the Loudbox Mini, a 60 watt, 2-channel amplifier that weighs less than 20 pounds but still packs the expected Fishman punch.

Read more about our amplifier offerings, as well as the pickups we install in acoustic instruments, on our Sound page.

MORE SOULDIER STRAPS

A very long time ago, a good selection of straps meant that you had both black and brown in stock. Happily, times have changed. We've just received another shipment of Souldier straps. Souldier straps feature vintage materials, including some of the classics from the 1960s, using the original stock of material. Instead of stitching the fabric to vinyl backing, it's sewn to recycled seatbelt material. All of this is done in a little shop in Chicago. Straps for guitars, mandolins and banjos. To see what's here, visit our Straps Page.

MORE FROM LOPRINZI UKULELES

We got to visit with Donna LoPrinzi last month and see quite a few examples of their ukuleles. Here's one that caught our attention, with a solid cedar top and solid mahogany back and sides, bound in multiple cream and black. Here's a larger photo.

We've recently received a number of new LoPrinzi ukuleles, in all koa and all mahogany versions in soprano, concert and tenor sizes. A more complete listing along with photos is on our New Ukuleles page.

Ome banjos

OME OLD-TIME BANJOS

The Ome Banjo Company has a new series of old-time banjos featuring twelve inch rims, necks (in walnut, mahogany or maple) that are a little shorter and a little wider than typically found, detailed with antiqued brass hardware. Inspired by vintage banjos, especially Ashborn banjos of the late 1800s, these new Omes are kind of elegant, kind of primitive. Here's more info on Ome banjos.

THE MILLINER-KOKEN COLLECTION OF AMERICAN FIDDLE TUNES

This is a must-have book for anyone interested in American old-time music. Over 1400 American old-time fiddle tunes, 888 pages, representing 347 fiddlers, most born before 1900. The book includes biographical information, tune cross-referencing and more. This monumental project was led by Walt Koken. Walt has a long involvement in string band music, having been a member of the Highwoods String Band. The book is $90, which sounds like a small chunk of change until you consider just how incredibly well done it is. Just think of it as less than 7 cents per tune.

YEP, WE'RE ON FACEBOOK

We're highlighting bits of news on our Facebook page these days: Oddball instruments, the small fun events that make life interesting here, reminders to humidify your instruments through the winter. We still spend lots more time at the repair bench than in front of the computer. But the Facebook page will allow us to do quick updates--maybe even feature repair projects we're working on. So join us on Facebook!

new Spruce Tree Music poster

SPRUCE TREE MUSIC TURNS 30!

Spruce Tree opened in December, 1980. We've weathered all sorts of storms: economic, political, and the scourge of pointy electric guitars. We've endured by sticking with what we know and love. We also have our loyal customers to thank, of course. Thank you, all.

To help celebrate, we have a new poster from Hatch Show Print, a Nashville company that's been designing and hand-printing posters since 1879. The new posters measure 22-1/2 x 13 inches, are 3-color, printed on smooth cardstock, and are $5.95.

This is the third poster done for us by Hatch Show Print. Here are the eariler posters.

FINE UKULELES FROM KIWAYA AND LOPRINZI

We're happy to be offering two additional lines of high grade ukuleles. LoPrinzi ukuleles are handmade in Florida, built by father-daughter team Augustino and Donna Loprinzi, experienced builders of classical and steel-string guitars. Kiwaya ukes have been built in Japan since 1955. Both companies offer instruments that are extremely sweet and responsive, classically Hawaiian-sounding.

Here's more information on these companies and ukulele models in stock.

A CONVERGENCE OF NATIONALS

We have quite a few Nationals in the shop right now, encompassing vintage, new and almost new. Among the vintage models, a c.1932 National Duolian with a gray crystalline "Duco" finish, as well as a c.1941 National Style O 14-fret guitar.

National Resophonic's "Replicon" models are in the "almost new" category. They start out as new Nationals, and then they're finished off to look like they're vintage. We have a couple of Replicons that are almost new. Which means that they've been "distressed" at National, and then pre-owned by someone else for a brief time. (Confused yet?)

Here are complete details and full photos of the used and vintage Nationals in stock.

And just to complete the picture, here are new National Resophonic guitars we have in stock, including steel-bodied, brass-bodied and wood-bodied models.

Strap Loxx

NEW STRAP LOCKS

Hard to imagine getting excited about strap locks--that is, until your strap suddenly slips off of your strap button. Here's a new strap lock design that has managed to catch our attention. It offers a simple one-handed quick release, but is quite secure while in use.

Here's more info--and even a video link.

While you're at it, you might as well peruse some of selection of straps, especially the zippy ones from Souldier. We've recently received a new supply.

DEERING EAGLE II BANJO

Deering has developed a new "Twenty-Ten" tone ring design that they've incorporated into their new model, the Eagle II. Round out the construction with dark-stained maple neck, rim and resonator, ebony fingerboard, Planetary tuners and a gloss finish. The net result is a fine instrument, sweet sounding but with plenty of power and depth as well. The best part is the mid-category pricing (list price $2399).

Here's a complete list of Deering banjos in stock.

Deering Eagle II

LARRIVEE WALNUT GUITARS

Among the recent arrivals are Larrivee L-03 guitars made with walnut backs and sides. Walnut is often overlooked in instrument building, but it's a lovely wood, tonally somewhere between mahogany and rosewood. Here's a larger view.

Here's a complete list of Larrivee guitars and mandolins in stock.

National Triolian Polychrome National M1 Tricone

NEW MODELS FROM NATIONAL

The folks at National Resophonic have been busy lately. The Triolian Polychrome is a new model, a very cool and accurately rendered reintroduction of an original National. Construction details include a steel body, single cone, slotted peghead and maple neck. It's painted finish features a traditional Hawaiian scene. It's the perfect antidote to winter, not just in looks but in sound. And yes, it's in stock.

Another new National just announced: The M1 Tricone, National's (almost) first wood-body tricone. (The original National company made a handful of wood body tricones at the beginning of WWII.) These instruments will are being built with laminated mahogany with a wood soundwell and handpainted steel coverplate. The sweet ring of a tricone combined with the tonal warmth of a wood body. Can't wait to hear it--due later this winter.

Here's our current list of Nationals in stock.

Chris wagoner fiddle book

CHRIS WAGONER WIELDS VIOLIN BOW AND PEN EQUALLY WELL!

Chris Wagoner keeps busy, what with all those gigs, studio sessions and lessons to give. A while back, music publisher Hal Leonard asked Chris to write a fiddle instruction book, and we're happy to annouce that's just come out. "Hal Leonard Fiddle Method" is a fine introduction to fiddle techniques for folks with a bit of experience playing violin. Chris has packed a lot of information into a modestly-sized book (and remarkably priced at $9.99 including the companion CD).

We're pleased that Chris offers lessons through our shop: Lesson info.

Dusty Strings FH34 Dusty Strings Crescendo 34

DUSTY STRINGS HARPS

Recently arrived, two fairly new harp models from Dusty Strings. The newest is the FH34, which brings together a combination of stellar tone, playing range and portability. The Crescendo 34 features the same size and playing range as the FH34 but with a few strucural simplifications, most notably a laminated Finnish birch soundboard. Visit our Harps page for more info on all the harps we carry.

VINTAGE GIBSONS

A number of fine classic Gibson guitars from the 1960s have shown up here recently. For comparison, we parked a J-50 next to a it's smaller cousin, the B-25. Here's a larger view of these two guitars. For the complete list of vintage Gibsons and other guitars, check out our Used and Vintage Guitars page.

NEW MODEL FROM NATIONAL: THE NRP

It's here! And it's very cool. National has just announced their latest model, the National-NRP. It's a reissue of a late 1930s Duolian, featuring a thin-gauge steel body with flat cut f-holes, finished with a hand painted "Green Silverburst" to give it a vintage appearance. Other cosmetical details include an ebony nut and plain black tuning machine buttons. These will be available in both 12-fret and 14-fret versions. The best part is that prices start at $2300 (list). Check our National page for a complete listing of models in stock.

Diamond Bottlenecks

DIAMOND BOTTLENECKS

We've gotten another shipment of hand-blown leaded glass bottlenecks from England. These bottlenecks are a treat in every way. We also carry their other bottleneck offerings and a sampling of fun stuff from other suppliers. See the latest photos and descriptions.

VINTAGE MANDOLINS, BANJOS and MORE

The planets aligned to bring us a number of interesting instruments, the cutest of which is a Leland Piccolo Mandolin, made by Lyon and Healy c.1912. This little instrument is tuned CGDA, an octave above mandola tuning. It's shown here in between two typical mandolins.

Also arriving recently, several vintage Gibsons: An A-1, another A-4, an A-3 (yes, the one with the white finish!), and an F-4. Full details are listed at Used & Vintage Mandolins. (Sorry, the F-4 and the Leland Piccolo mandolin are already gone.)

A few interesting five-string banjos have also come along (and gone, too). If you're looking for a long-neck five-string, we have two of 'em. Used & Vintage Five String Banjos.

Violin set-up

SETTING UP VIOLINS

Violins periodically need to have some of their fittings (bridge, soundpost, pegs, etc.) adjusted or replaced in order to perform optimally. Here's a more detailed run-down of what's involved in the process of violin set-up. Yes, we do a lot of set-up work on violins here, along with more extensive repair work.

SPRUCE TREE T-SHIRT SIGHTING

Thanks to Zak for the following:

Hi all at Spruce Tree --

Just thought I'd drop a note: Looks like David Grisman had one of your shirts on at the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival in San Francisco. There's a photo up on the Mandolin Cafe right now: Photo

Pretty nice advertising!

Personally, we wonder if it isn't just as newsworthy that someone's wearing a t-shirt in December.... For the record, you can read more about our t-shirts, as well as hand-printed Spruce Tree posters from Hatch Show Print.

OUR REPAIR SHOP

Spruce Tree started out as a repair shop that grew into a store offering quality vintage instruments, gradually adding new instruments, more staff, on and on. We're still primarily a repair shop. We've finally put together a page highlighting this fact. It's rare that we stop to photograph instruments in the process of being repaired. Mostly, the owners of these instruments are eager to have their instruments back in their hands, so we barely stop for photo ops. On the other hand, inquiring minds want to know. Here's the start of our page on repairs done in our shop.

WHAT'S INVOLVED IN SETTING UP A GUITAR?

We do a lot of repair work here; it's how our shop began. A good set-up is obviously important to how a guitar sounds and how comfortably it plays. What surprises some is that a thorough set-up is very important with new guitars as well. Therefore, every instrument we sell spends a fair amount of time on the workbench before we make it available. We've put together a page outlining the steps we take when setting up a new guitar. Here's our Guitar Set-Ups page.

INSTRUMENT SHIPPING ADVENTURES

There once was a time when you could receive a shipment of newborn chicks in the mail. This may still be true in rural areas, places where your postal carrier knows you by your first name, asks how your mother is doing, etc. In most places, however, I don't think that this is the norm any longer. So if you can't trust the post office or shipping companies with baby chicks, how can you trust them with your guitar? See a few examples of how NOT to ship your guitar on our "Frequently Asked Questions" page.
